Description

Lewis Central Middle School is currently seeking a Special Education teacher for the 2024-2025.

 

Lewis Central Middle School is a 6th-8th grade building serving approximately 750 students and 60 full time teachers. LCMS staff and students are committed to our district vision of “Inspiring Excellence” in all we do: academics, positive staff and student relationships, parents/family involvement, as well as athletics and fine arts activities. LCMS staff utilize collaborative, innovative instructional methods and support each student in maximizing their individual potential.

 

Applicants for this position must currently hold or be able to obtain an Iowa teaching license with the appropriate endorsement through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners no later than August 2024. 

 

Acceptable Endorsements for this position include:

 

K-8 Instructional Strategist I: Mild/Moderate - 260

5-12 Instructional Strategist I: Mild/Moderate - 261

Reading Endorsement (preferred but not required)

  

 

Job Summary: 

 

Under the general supervision of the building administrators, facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills by implementing district approved curriculum (following the Iowa Teaching Standards for subject listed above), documenting student progress and outcomes, addressing specific educational needs of individual students and creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment.  Provide feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations and goals. This position will also collaborate with building staff including other teachers, support staff, administration and district support staff to carry out our mission of inspiring excellence.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education
  • License issued by Iowa BoEE with acceptable endorsement(s) for subject matter listed above

Essential Functions and Knowledge Required

  • Develops and administers curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Creates a welcoming and engaging learning environment for all students.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by actively taking part in professional learning communities and other opportunities.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other building professional staff members to evaluate and assess curriculum and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation and lunch.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.
  • Reliable work attendance is required. 


Travel Requirements

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

  • Works in indoor and outdoor environments.
